17th March 2010
Last night, Nunawading Swimming Club’s Leisel Jones, won her 20th Australian title with victory in the women’s 50m breaststroke.
Jones, the golden girl of Australian swimming, was selected on her first Australian team at the age of 14, when, in the same pool, she won her first national title and later in the year raced to silver over 100m at the Olympic Games.
Jones touched the wall in 30.87 to lead home young Queenslander Leiston Pickett (31.06), while defending champion and Nunawading Swimming Club team mate Sarah Katsoulis (31.12) finished in third place.
Jones is now well placed to tackle the 100 and 200m events later in the week, where she is a near certainty to qualify as she bids to retain all three of her Commonwealth titles in Delhi later this year.
Our third medal winner on the night was Jeremy Tidy who won Bronze in the 200m IM in a time of 2:17.86.
