AUSTRALIAN AGE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Nic Leads Nuna at Australian Age Champs
Nunawading Swimming Club’s Nicholas Groenewald has won 3 Gold medals at the 2010 Australian Age Swimming Championships which were held in Sydney last week. While any medal at these Championships is an outstanding effort, Nicholas is only 12 years old and will compete in the same events again next year.
Nicholas won the Boys 12-13 years 200m Individual Medley in 2:12.11, only 0.13 seconds outside the Australian 13 years and under record. He also won the 12-13 years 200m Backstroke, blitzing the field to win by nearly 5 seconds in a time of 2:12.20 and the 12-13 years 100m Backstroke in a time of 1:00.57.
Nicholas also won silver in the 12-13 years 200m Breaststroke and finished in 4th place in the 12-13 year 100m Breaststroke. He was also an integral member of three relay teams winning another 2 silver and 1 bronze medal.
Stephanie Moore won two silver medals in the Girls 12-13 years 100m and 200m Breaststroke events. Swimming at her first National Championships, Stephanie swam two great races to secure her medals.
Llewellyn Little swam a great race in the 17-18 years Boys 400m Individual Medley to win the silver medal in a time of 4:31.51. Llewellyn also finished 9th in the 200m Butterfly.
Swimming in the Girls 17-18 800m Freestyle, Nunawading’s Belinda Bennett won the bronze medal in 8:59.45. Belinda also competed in the finals of the 400m Individual Medley (4th), 400m Freestyle (6th), 200m Backstroke (9th) 200m Freestyle (9th) and 50m Freestyle (10th).
Other individual finalists for the Club were Kimberly McDonald (7th in 200m Breaststroke), Kate Laidlaw (6th in 800m Freestyle & 7th in 400m Freestyle), Tyran Groves (8th in 100m Butterfly), Jack Currie (8th in 100m Freestyle), Meg Parry (9th in 400m Freestyle), Nerice Smith (10th in 400m Individual Medley) and Lliam Hunt (10th in 50m Freestyle).
Nunawading was also successful in the relay events winning two silver and one bronze medal.
In the Boys 14/u Medley relay the Nunawading team of Nicholas Groenewald, Scott Huang, Benjamin Schoenmaekers and Jack Currie won the silver medal.
In the Boys 14/u 4 x 50m Freestyle relay, the Nunawading team of Benjamin Schoenmaekers, Nicholas Groenewald, Scott Huang and Jack Currie also won the silver medal.
In the Boys 16/u 4 x 100 Medley Relay the team of Nicholas Groenewald, Mark Bustard, Tyran Groves and Lliam Hunt swam a great race to win the bronze medal.
Throughout the meet there were many other fine performances recorded by Nunawading swimmers in the heat sessions. Congratulations to all team members on their efforts and success over the 6 day meet.

Nunawading’s team was relatively young with many 12 to 15 year swimmers, providing a strong base for future success in the years to come.

NUNAWADING IS NAMED “AUSTRALIAN PREMIER CLUB”

Nunawading Swimming Club has been named the ‘Australian Premier Club’ following the completion of the 2010 Telstra Australian Swimming Championships in Sydney last night.
The top 3 clubs at the Championships were announced as:
1st Nunawading VIC 925.5 points
2nd St Peters Western QLD 768 points
3rd Melbourne Vicentre VIC 688.5 points
This is an outstanding result for the Club and means the Club has been positioned as number one in Australia at an Open level for 2 years in a row. The last two years have been the only times in the Club’s 50 year history that they have won this title.
Congratulations to Head Coach Amanda Isaac and High Performance Coach Rohan Taylor on their meticulous planning and preparation of these athletes. Thank you to all the National Youth Coach Nick Veliades for his development of many of these athletes over the years and to the support staff who contributed to the Club’s performance at this level of the sport.

All Juniors – A wrap up

Over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of March 90+ of Nuna’s juniors raced in the All Junior Semi Finals and Finals at MSAC, representing our largest team ever at this meet. To top that off we had 51 individuals making finals, which is nearly double the number of finalists from last year!

THREE NUNA SWIMMERS ON COMMONWEALTH GAMES TEAM

Nunawading Swimming Club will have 3 swimmers on the Telstra Dolphins Australian Swimming Team to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Leisel Jones, Sarah Katsoulis and Ashley Delaney were announced last night as members of the team and will compete in the Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championships later in the year.
LEIGH NUGENT ANNOUNCED AS AUSTRALIAN HEAD COACH

Former Nunawading Swimming Club Head Coach Leigh Nugent was last week named Head Coach of Swimming Australia. Nugent who is the current patron of the Club was Nunawading’s Head Coach from 1979 to 2000 and played a large role in the development of the clubs business and swimming foundation.
