Nunawading Swimming Club has one of the most comprehensive swimmer support programs in the Australia.

The Club is based at Aqualink Nunawading in Fraser Place, Forest Hill. The Centre boasts an indoor 8 lane 50m pool and separate teaching and junior squad leisure pool.

The club has a number of unique advantages over other swimming clubs in Australia. These include:

ASSETS
The Club owns its own Clubrooms at the facility. The Clubrooms includes one of the largest free weight gyms utilised by any swim club in Australia, a swimmer recreation room with television and video as well as a kitchen and separate Boardroom.

DAVID COOK SCHOLARSHIP
The David Cook Scholarship was instigated to honour the considerable contribution the late David Cook made to the sport of swimming. David served at Club and District levels for some 25 years and at State and National level for over 15 years. David was a Life member of Nunawading Swimming Club.

This scholarship, valid from 1 May to 30 April each swimming season, and was first presented in 1990/91, aims to foster swimmers with proven potential as competitive swimmers who may not have access to the high standard of facilities and coaching that are available at the Nunawading Swimming Club.

Scholarship winners will receive:
• Free swim coaching and gym training (approx value $1800);
• Free entry fees to State and National Championships (approx value $300);
• Free flights to National Championships (approx value $1000);
• One issue of all standard Nunawading Swimming Club gear including tracksuit, t-shirt, bathers and 2 swim caps (approx value $300).
• Estimated total value $3,400.

Eligibility
Applicants should be:
• Registered swimmers;
• Aged 12 years and over;
• Highly motivated.

They should have displayed:
• Exceptional swimming ability;
• Potential for further development as competitive swimmers.

The period of the Scholarship is one year, in general from 1 May to 30 April, however a scholarship may be awarded at any time. Past winners of the scholarship will not be eligible to re-apply however in special circumstances the Club may continue the scholarship past one year. Nunawading Swimming Club members are not eligible to apply. The application package details the terms and conditions of the scholarship and requests information on the swimmer applying for the scholarship.

SWIMMER INCENTIVE SCHEMES
The Nunawading Swimming Club offers a range of financial incentives for swimming families based on swimmer performances at a National level. While the National Pool Swimmer Incentive Scheme has been in operation for many years, a new Open Water Swimming and Swimmer with a Disability schemes have been introduced for the 2008/09 swimming season.

NSC swimmers who achieve the results below will be rewarded with a reduction in their monthly squad fees in the following swimming season.

National Pool Swimmer Incentive Scheme
The following table details the National Pool Swimmer incentives on offer for the 2008/09 season based on swimmer performances at the 2008 Australian Championships, 2008 Australian Age Championships and 2008 Australian Short Course Championships.

NATIONAL COMPETITION TRAVEL SUBSIDY
Where the Nunawading Swimming Club Board chooses to apply subsidies to assist swimmers to attend swim meets, the following will apply:

[1] For each interstate Australian Championships, Australian Short Course Championships, Australian Age Championships and Australian Open Water Championships, the Swim Committee shall present to the Board the names of swimmers who are entered to compete at the meet and their subsidy amount according to the criteria below. This shall be provided to the Board at least 4 weeks prior to the Championships for approval;

[2] The amount of each subsidy shall depend on the involvement of the swimmer at identified Club and State meets in that season. If an Australian Championship meet is held prior to the conduct of the identified Club and State level meets, the swimmers attendance at the same Club and State level meets in the previous season shall be used to calculate the subsidy available;

[3] To be eligible for a travel subsidy the swimmer must have competed for NSC at the most recent Victorian (Long Course) Championships. The swimmer is required to compete in at least 3 individual events and make themselves available for club relays, if selected;

[4] The amount of each subsidy shall be dependent on the swimmer competing for NSC at the following meets:
(a) Nunawading Long Course Meet,
(b) Nunawading Short Course Meet and,
(c) Nunawading Club Championships;

[5] If the swimmer competes in at least two events at one of the meets listed in [4] above, they will be eligible for a $100 subsidy. If the swimmer competes in at least two events at two of the meets listed in [4] above they will be eligible for a $200 subsidy. If the swimmer competes in at least two events at all three meets listed in [4] above they will be eligible for a $300 subsidy.

[6] This By-Law shall apply for all Club members including new Club members;

[7] If swimmers cannot compete at any of the meets listed in [4] above due to a Metro East, Swimming Victoria or Swimming Australia swim meet or camp, it is assumed that the NSC swimmer would have competed at the meet;

TERTIARY ASSISTANCE SUBSIDY
Swimmers who are completing Year 12 shall be offered the following reduction in fees in 2008.

February 2008 to October 2008 $50 reduction on monthly squad fees
November 2008 100% reduction on this months squad fee

Full fees will be payable in January and December each year.

Swimming Australia Junior Excellence (JX) Program
The 2008/09 Junior Excellence (JX) Time Standards have now been finalised by Swimming Australia.

All Nunawading swimmers aged 9, 10, 11, 12 & 13 years should be aiming to achieve as many of these times as possible over the 2008/09 season (1 April 2008 to 31 March 2009).

Nunawading had the second highest number of members achieve a JX time standard in Australia last season. Nunawading was awarded the trophy for the most Gold and Gold Star awards won by a Club in Australia last season.

The JX program provides every Nunawading swimmer aged 9 years to 13 years to be recognised for their performances throughout the year.

SWIMMER SUPPORT STAFF

Physiotherapy (Physiohealth)
Nunawading Swimming Club has joined forces with Physiohealth, one of Victoria and Australia’s leading physiotherapy and massage service organisations.

Physiohealth is located at Aqualink Nunawading, the Club’s home pool, and Physiohealth staff have a very strong background in swimming and providing the appropriate support for swimmers around their training and racing schedules. Many of the Physiohealth staff work with the Victorian Institute of Sport and have been members of the Australian Swimming Team as masseurs and physiotherapists.

Nunawading swimmers training in the National Age, Youth and Open Squads receive a 25% discount on physiotherapy fees with Physiohealth.

All other Nunawading swimmers and their families receive a 10% discount on physiotherapy fees.

Myotherapy (Physiohealth)
Myotherapy is an ideal tool for assisting swimmers as it can encompass prevention, rehabilitation and maintenance treatments along with the management of any current injuries/complaints.
Myotherapists assess and physically treat pain, injury and dysfunction affecting movement and mobility. Myotherapy is applied in the preventative, corrective and rehabilitative phases of therapy to restore and maintain the normal integrity of the soft tissue structure (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) of the human body.

Common conditions that Myotherapists can treat include:
• Sporting & occupational injuries
• Postural conditions
• Acute and Chronic pain complaints
• Scoliosis / Kyphosis
• Headaches / migraines
• Acute and chronic back and neck pain
• Chronic overuse syndromes - tendonitis, RSI, tennis/golfer's elbow
• Shoulder pain, impingement syndrome, frozen shoulder
• Hand & finger numbness / tingling – thoracic outlet syndrome
• Knee, leg & foot pain – shin splints, patella tracking dysfunction, ankle sprains
• Osteo and Rheumatoid Arthritis
• Pregnancy related pain – pre/post natal complaints

Nutrition
Louise Falzon (Dietitian)

Nunawading Swimming Club would like to introduce you to a new member of our support team, Louise Falzon, Sports Dietitian. Louise is a highly experienced dietitian who specialises in sports nutrition, weight loss advice, and the management of eating disorders. Louise can give expert advice in the areas of recovery, pre and post training and competition nutrition for swimming.

Louise currently works in private practice and corporate health. She runs the nutrition program for swimming at the Victorian Institute of Sport and also consults as the dietitian to the Australian Swimming Team and the Western Bulldogs Football Club.

Louise will be available for consultations once every month at NSC.

Simon Moule is the Club’s resident strength and conditioning coach.
