VICTORIAN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Nunawading Swimming Club has been named the Champion Open Club following the 2012 Victorian Open Swimming Championships held at Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre last week.
Following a strong performance over the 3 day meet, the title of Champion Open Club came down to the last two events which were both relays. |
|
It was a thrilling finish with the Girls 4 x 100 Freestyle relay winning the bronze medal and then the Mens 4 x 100 Freestyle relay winning the gold medal to take out the title.
At the Championships, the Club’s swimmers won 29 medals including 8 gold, 13 silver and 8 bronze in an outstanding display of speed swimming. While the Club won the Open point score by 24 points, it also finished in second place on the overall club point score, combining the Victorian Age and Open Championship results, behind the Melbourne Vicentre club.
Leading the charge for Nunawading was World Championship bronze medallist Sarah Katsoulis winning gold in the Women’s 100m & 200m Breaststroke events and 2008 Olympian Ashley Delaney who won gold in the 50m and 200m backstroke. In the Multi-Class events, Prue Watt won gold in the Women’s 50m Breaststroke.
Swimming for Great Britain, Ellen Gandy, who has trained at Nunawading for the past 3 years, also won gold in the Women’s 50m and 100m Butterfly events.
Other individual medallists during the meet were Belinda Parslow, Tay Zimmer, Kate Haywood, Jeremy Tidy and Matt Haanappel.
Nunawading also won 3 gold medals in the relays. In the Mens 4 x 100m Medley relay, the team of Ashley Delaney, Nicholas D’arcy-Evans, Jeremy Saunders and Shane Asbury won gold and Michael Klim, Ashley Delaney, Travis Mahoney and Shane Asbury also won the Mens 4 x 100m Freestyle relay.
The other gold medal was won by Belinda Parslow, Belinda Bennett, Karly Mansfield and Samantha Bennett in the Women’s 4 x 200m Freestyle relay.
Nunawading’s High Performance Coach Rohan Taylor said “The Championships provided our open swimmers with the opportunity to race against some of the best swimmers in the country. With the Olympic Trials coming up in Adelaide in March, it was really important for Nunawading swimmers to race hard as part of their overall preparation.”
One of the highlights at the meet was the return to competition swimming of Michael Klim and Ian Thorpe. Klim, swimming for Nunawading, made the final of the 100m Freestyle event and led the Mens 4 x 100m Freestyle relay to victory.
